Starting a conversation
Five opening messages that sound like you
A little curiosity can do more than a perfect line. Here are five places to begin.

A profile catches your attention. Then the empty message box starts to feel like an audition.
You don’t need a performance. A friendly question about something the person chose to share can give you both an easy place to begin. These examples are starting points; change the words until they sound like you.
1. Notice a small detail
“You mentioned finding good little cafés. What makes one worth going back to?”
Choose a detail you actually want to hear more about. A specific question gives someone more to work with than a compliment that could fit anyone.
2. Offer an easy choice
“For a free afternoon: bookshop, a walk, or somewhere with excellent snacks?”
A small choice can be playful without needing a long answer. You can share your own choice too, so the conversation doesn’t feel like an interview.
3. Ask about an interest
“I saw that you like cooking. What’s something you enjoy making even when you’re just cooking for yourself?”
You don’t need the same hobbies to be interested in someone’s world. Leave room for the ordinary answer as well as the impressive one.
4. Share something of your own
“Your mention of quiet weekends made me smile. Mine usually includes a walk and a very slow breakfast. What does yours look like?”
A little of your personality makes it easier for someone to respond to you, rather than only to a question.
5. Let a simple hello be simple
“Hi, I liked reading your profile and wanted to say hello. What’s something you’re looking forward to this week?”
You’re allowed to be direct. A genuine greeting is enough to open a door.
After you press send
Give the other person room to reply. If they answer, follow something they said before moving to a new question. If they don’t, you don’t need to send a series of messages or search for an explanation in your wording.
A conversation needs interest on both sides. Your first message only needs to offer a small, respectful beginning.
